Excellent piece Paul. I think too many Christians view scripture reading and prayer as separate activities. And while they are distinct, they should be connected. We should pray in response to what God says to us in His word.
Thanks for that input Frank. Good point. We can learn a lot by looking at how David, Daniel, Nehemiah, Paul and many others prayed as recorded in the Bible.
I love this post, Paul, for so many reasons! You were vulnerable and courageous to talk with Ted and he was willing and able to talk to you. Isnt God great and faithful to help us in our times of need. Gives new meaning to a “Ted Talk!” ❤️
Paul, that’s a really great post. Thank you for sharing. Ted sounds like an amazing Christian friend. There’s no doubt that God put him in your path for a reason. While I don’t have a story quite like that, I will share a bit about prayer. For most of my life, I sort of pretended to be a Christian but seven years ago, God reached down and got ahold of me, and did the most remarkable things to call me and save me from a terrible lost life of sin. As I look back, those dramatic answered prayers were not formal prayers said in a perfect praying posture. Rather, the were just me humbly and desperately calling out, with eyes open and talking to God, as if He was sitting right there in front of me. God revealed His truth, the truth of Christ and the truth of scripture to me, in a series of the most remarkable moments. If someone else had previously told me that God did those things, I would have thought they were crazy. But, He did those things for me and He reached you, through Ted, because he loves us. Praise God for that!
Awesome Jim how God works - in various ways and in various circumstances. You have a testimony as well, you never know who might be encouraged by it. God does love us as His kids and works in such amazing ways.
This article brought back some fond memories. Years ago, I too had an ex-Marine mentor in the Navigators. He helped me build a firm foundation in the scriptures and prayer.
We all need that personal connection with a friend and mentor who's farther along the path of discipleship, to help and encourage us.
And, after many years, when we've taken their place, we become a mentor, offering a helping hand to the next generation of brethren.
Good points, thanks for sharing. Disciple Makers are certainly a treasure and those of us who are blessed by them can bless others by doing the same for others. My friend had another marine reach out to him in some of his formative years in the faith.
Wow! This deeply blessed my heart. The verses from Luke just messed me up in a good way (please what version did you use?) Reading this post gives me a better insight into your heart for The salt and Light daily. Thank you so very much.
Paul! Thanks for this piece! This is my life's passion, and I love seeing this multiplied many times over. As we model for others what discipleship looks like, they will emulate how we invest. I'm sure you are now discipling others just like you were discipled.

The Old Testament is as relevant today as it was back then!
